Birds, Boats and Brighter Later

Brighter Later is back! Now the fourth in a series of charity gigs held at The Boogaloo, we’re aiming to raise even more money than before for Teenage Cancer Trust! Here’s who we have lined up for you this time:

ICE BLACK BIRDS

A bluesy four piece originating from Brighton we're so excited about Ice Black Birds acoustic set. Drawing influences from 60s and 70s rock ‘n’ roll they formed from the ashes of old London, Sheffield and S
cottish bands and seem set to bring a fresh burst of modern blues back into the industry. The boys will be showcasing some new songs that will no doubt be as catchy as the rest.

TOM WILLAMS AND THE BOAT

An anti-folk band best described as Bob Dylan meets Lightspeed Champion/Eugene McGuiness with the lyrical style of Regina Spektor or Win Butler. Beautifully written songs that will stay with you long after you leave. Come see their unique stripped back set with us!

SEMAPHORE

The Semaphore sound is solidly underpinned by Louis Brennan’s unmistakable deep, dark and gravel lined baritone that hints maturity far beyond his years. They grew from roots of blues, up through the bedrock of sorrowful story telling with a galvanizing country growl.

ALICE WATTS

Her influences pull together deep smooth soul, tender folk blues and playful Caribbean rhythms. There is a consistent thread of British urban folk throughout her songs and her smooth vocals leave a lingering feeling of peace. See her live and you’ll fall for her as much as we have.

Adding a unique flair to the night is shamanic poet, professional nursery-rhymer and regular Brighter Later compere, Robert Price. He will be introducing the bands with bursts of energy and entertaining you while the bands set up behind him.

The fabulous ClubRees DJs (host of the legendary indie disco at The Fly) will be kicking out the jams throughout the afternoon and into the evening whilst we party, powered by that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from knowing your support is helping to change young people’s lives all over the country.

The afternoon kicks off at 4pm, with the first of the bands from 5pm. Its only £5 and every penny raised will go to Teenage Cancer Trust!

See you there!

THE CHEEK

The Cheek are an audacious five piece, their new single Just One Night is a hedonistic youthful hark which oozes energy and ambition. Originally known as Cheeky Cheek And The Nosebleeds, the group shortened their name. At just 14 years of age these lads got together as school friends. The confident self belief they exude has propelled them into the limelight. We can’t wait for this acoustic set!

THE LIGHTWINGS

The Lightwings only formed in February 2010, yet have already proved they are set for big things! A modern twist on '60s Rock 'n' Roll and '90s Britpop; the sound of The Lightwings has been described as Rock 'n' Roll from the glory days of the British Invasion flavoured with home grown Indie.

ALI WHITTON

Anyone who quotes Jack Kerouac on their Myspace instantly has a special place in our hearts! Ali Whitton’s beautiful songs and sometimes dark lyrics will give you goosebumps. Not one to be missed!

JHARDA

A unique singer-songwriter, Jharda taught herself the lever harp whilst at university and then spent several summers playing at folk festivals up and down the UK as part of a contemporary Celtic band. For the past three years she has been performing regularly as a solo artist, mesmerising audiences all over London with her mature and tuneful self-penned love songs. The delicious contrast between rich vocals and crisp, delicate harp, leaves a lasting impression on the listener, whilst introspective lyrics are delivered with folk-pop panache and a captivating emotional intensity.

Teenage Cancer Trust

We’re very excited to announce that from now on all funds raised through Brighter Later will be going to Teenage Cancer Trust.

We're hoping to do our bit to help them on their quest to improve the lives of the many teenagers and young adults who are affected by cancer. Here’s what they had to say about the support of Brighter Later:
‘Music has been core to Teenage Cancer Trust and what the charity does since it was established over 20 years ago so we're, of course, delighted to be associated with Brighter Later and the wonderful Boogaloo. A perfect opportunity to sample a mix of the hottest new talent around and some famous faces all in the name of a great cause. Funds raised through these monthly events will make a real difference to the lives of the many teenagers and young adults facing a cancer diagnosis. Huge thanks to all involved’

Thank you for all your support!

A massive thank you to all of you who have shown your support for both charity and music at the last two Brighter Later gigs.

In just two shows we have managed to raise just shy of £1000 and we couldn’t have done it without you guys!

Every penny made so far has gone to Cancer Research UK, the world’s leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research.

Help us spread the word about Brighter Later. If you haven’t got a Brighter Later badge already, come along to our next gig on July 25th and pick one up!
