Boogaloo to brighten up for charity gigs

Drowned in Sound

Starting from tonight London's The Boogaloo is to play host to a regular series of live shows in aid of charity. The nights will go under the Nick Drake-inspired moniker of Brighter Later.

As reported by the Londonist, the first show will be in aid of the good folks at Cancer Research UK. To get the charitable feeling going, each of the acts will be donating their sets for free. They include former Courtney Love side-woman Bethia Beadman, alt-folk songwriter The Train Chronicles, indie-poppers Whales In Cubicles and gravel-voiced troubadour Semaphore.

The bands will be kept in order by compere Robert Price, a poet who does a mean Warren Zevon recital and ClubRees, former hosts of The Fly’s legendary indie night, will be DJing after the bands.

Cancer Research UK’s Katie Billingham said:

“We’re funded entirely by the general public and it’s thanks to the energy and commitment of our supporters that Cancer Research UK’s scientists, doctors and nurses are able to go on making progress towards our vision: together we will beat cancer. I encourage everyone to go along for a great evening and help support Cancer Research UK's lifesaving work.”

Tickets cost £5 on the door with all proceeds going directly to the charity. Brighter Later will return on Thursday 3rd June with a lineup still to be confirmed.

Preview: Brighter Later @ The Boogaloo
Londonist

Brighter Later launches its new series of gigs for charity on Thursday at Highgate's Boogaloo; yes that one where Kate Moss and Pete Doherty used to hang out. That aside, it's a smashing boozer replete with 1960s photo booth for when you get drunk and need to have terrible photos and one of the best juke boxes in London. Not that you'll be needing that as taking to the stage are four up and coming acts who are all giving their time and talent for free, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The line up features Bethia Beadman, fresh from backing Courtney Love and a solo set from The Train Chronicles - Lightspeed Champion’s bass-player showcasing his alt folk songwriting. One of the silliest band names we've heard in a while comes in with Whales In Cubicles but reserve judgement for their "majestic indiepop" and, finally, Semaphore promise an "unmistakable deep, dark and gravel-lined baritone". Throw in a shamanic poet compere and DJ till late and you've got a groovy night in aid of a great cause to go to.

The Brighter Later launch party is on Thursday 8 April at from 7pm. Become a fan on Facebook and keep up with the line ups.

Brighter Later Presents....

Brighter Later is a series of stripped down and intimate gigs at The Boogaloo to raise money for charity. This one is for Cancer Research UK. We aim to give you that warm fuzzy feeling while presenting you with our favourite new artists. Here's who we've got lined up for our very first show:

Thursday 8th April 2010 @ The Boogaloo, Highgate (7pm-1am)

BETHIA BEADMAN

Bethia Beadman began playing music in West Country pubs and on the bandstand bill at Glastonbury. She has been in Courtney Love’s band and in psychedelic, folk rock band Circulus. She has sung in St. Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican Rome and is now recording her first album with Mike Bennett and Co. including Mark Refoy from Spiritualised. See her live and you'll fall for her as much as we have.

THE TRAIN CHRONICLES

Solo set by Martin Brignall, an alt folk singer/songwriter who draws influence from a huge variety of sources, including Captain Beefheart, Lonnie Donegan and Bad Brains.

WHALES IN CUBICLES

Whales In Cubicles are a brand new band from London. They play majestic indiepop with a sophisticated yet blistering sonic edge. Citing influences as diverse as Jonathan Richman, Elliot Smith and Tom Waits, they are not to be missed.

SEMAPHORE

The Semaphore sound is solidly underpinned by Louis Brennan’s unmistakable deep, dark and gravel lined baritone that hints maturity far beyond his years. They grew from roots of blues, up through the bedrock of sorrowful story telling with a galvanizing country growl.

CLUBREES

The fabulous ClubRees DJ's, hosts of a legendary night at central London's premier indie disco The Fly, will also be spinning the decks and kicking out the jams.

As if that wasn’t enough, The Boogaloo is now home to one of those beautiful old fashioned photo booths, where you get a strip of 4 different black and white photos. Smile!

The night will start at 7pm with the first of the night’s bands to follow soon after.

Tickets are £5 and are available here, with limited availabilty on the door.

All money raised from ticket sales will go to Cancer Research UK to help them continue their amazing work.
